Nazr-e-Bad, the evil eye, is something many families worry about. Islam acknowledges it, and it also gives us simple, beautiful ways to seek Allah's protection, without fear taking over our hearts.
The Prophet ﷺ said that the evil eye is real. (Reported in Sahih Muslim)
Daily protection from the Sunnah
- Morning and evening adhkar: recite Surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas three times each, morning and evening.
- Ayat al-Kursi (2:255): after each fard prayer and before sleeping.
- Say "MashaAllah" and "Barak Allahu feek": when you admire something in yourself or others, remember Allah and pray for barakah.
- Ruqyah with the Quran: recitation of Surah Al-Fatiha and the Mu'awwidhatayn over oneself or a family member.
Hasad (envy): guarding the heart
Protection is not only about others. The Sunnah teaches us to keep our own hearts free of envy: to be content with what Allah has given, to pray for others' blessings, and to put our trust (tawakkul) in Allah.
