Every life is full of decisions: a proposal of marriage, a new business, a job offer, a journey. Islam gives us a beautiful way to bring these moments to Allah before we act. That way is Istikhara, which means asking Allah for what is best.
The Prophet ﷺ used to teach his companions to make Istikhara in all of their affairs, just as he taught them a surah of the Quran. (Reported in Sahih al-Bukhari)
When is Istikhara made?
Istikhara is for permissible matters where you are unsure which way is better: marriage, business, travel, work and family decisions. It is not needed for things that are clearly obligatory or clearly forbidden.
The Sunnah way
- Make wudu and choose a time outside the disliked prayer times.
- Pray two rak'at of nafl prayer.
- Recite the Dua al-Istikhara, taught in Sahih al-Bukhari, and mention your matter in your heart.
- Place your trust in Allah, and move forward with the path He makes easy for you.
Istikhara is not only about dreams. Often the answer comes as ease and openness in one direction, or obstacles in another. Alongside Istikhara, the Sunnah also encourages mashwara, seeking advice from sincere, knowledgeable people.
Asking a trusted person for Istikhara
Many families also ask a trusted person of knowledge to make Istikhara and Dua for them. At Aura Mind, every Istikhara is done properly and honestly. You will be told the true reality of your matter and never misguided.
A heart at peace
The deepest gift of Istikhara is peace of heart: knowing that you placed your decision in Allah's hands. Whatever He chooses for you is best, even when its wisdom is not yet clear.
